talking

today, as the introduction to the workshop, was a chance for everyone to talk about the project they were beginning and the background to their artistic practice in dance/film. this included showing excerpts of material from previous works.

cordelia beresford showed a 5 minute work which she envisioned as a gallery projection and that pretty much all the participants agreed stood one it’s own as a short film. it was a simple, beautiful and moving piece that showed an aboriginal security guard alone in a huge space. he stands up and begins a dance that is both significant and understated. a cleansing of the spirits that still exist in that space. perhaps relating to the loss that the greater indigenous population has suffered in australia’s history.

the group is quite diverse in it’s approaches and in the projects that are being explored. i think this is mostly good as it allows a chance to hear views and perspectives that i wouldn’t otherwise think about. at the same time there were moments during all the talking that i felt like i just wanted to get on with doing.

at the end of the day adelina and i stayed around and had a quick dance. it was such a relief to move after a day of sitting and talking.

one of the things that has come up - that i’m interested in thinking about - is how the dance practice adelina and i have can influence or contribute to the process of developing the screen material for this project. i think there’s a benefit in having this danced relationship when we start working with me on the other side of the camera - but am not really sure how to talk about it yet.
